A staple among deep crankers

The fat free shad series has been one of the most popular deep crankbaits since it was first introduced by Excalibur and marketed by Mark Davis who used one to help him win the Classic and Angler of the Year. It got its name because Mark attributed his success to losing weight before the season, bet a lot of you didn't know that. Now its called the Bomber fat free shad but its still just as effective. Colors have been added (Sexy shad ripoff) and taken away but the color selection is still adequate, besides the citrus shad was the color Mark Davis used and its still effective. The flat sides make the bait easier to crank and the coffin bill shape helps deflect cover. This bait is a wide wobbler but don't limit to warm water it is also a good crayfish imitation when bounced over rocks. While I don't think the hooks are what they used to be on these baits they can be sharpened or replaced and I still think these are among the most durable crankbaits around. With so many lures out these days I use the pro trails to help me narrow my choices and I see the Fat Free shad come up often in big tournaments. Last year Tim Horton used one on Kentucky Lake to finish second. He modified his by sanding the edges of the bill to make a tighter action. But there are many other cases where Fat Free shads were major players unmodified. I use mine mostly for summer crankbait fishing over 12ft especially if there is wood around. The fat free shad seems to come through cover better than most deep divers. I also like the fact that the Fat Free Shad has one big rattle. There are lots of deep divers out there but the Fat Free shad should a strong consideration for everybody and is a must for serious deep crankbait fisherman.

I began using this crank when I first started fishing when I was little. It has remained a staple in my fishing. I have added other cranks to my list of favorites, but this one still catches fish. They have a great selection of shad imitations to choose from. They also have different sizes to choose from which I really like. SN name: bd pettit

The Fat Free Shad in the Guppy size (1/4 oz.) has been one of my go-to baits for more years than I care to remember. The Citrus Shad color has seemed to work best.
