Smithwick Devil's Horses
Smithwick Devil's Horse — The
Devil’s Horse topwater prop bait is a classic, prop-equipped, handcrafted wood
bass fishing lure. The unique buoyancy of wood, combined with two carefully
balanced, surface-churning propellers, duplicates the unique commotion of
fleeing shad to produce rod-busting strikes from surface feeding fish.

No double prop bait is as popular as the Devils Horse. This affordable wooden prop bait spits and darts and catches fish as well as every. The design hasnt changed over the years but it is one of those lures that have stood the test of time. But while the Devils Horse catches fish one modification is long over due. The old style hook hangers need to go. The hooks on the bait are not high quality and the hangers give fish leverage to throw the bait. The hooks can be sharpened and it still catches fish but if you remove the hangers and do some modifications and drill and split ring trebles you will lose fewer fish. The Devils Horse is primarily a target bait great when cast along weedlines especially or any thick cover. Which explains why the devils horse has a cult following in Florida. Unlike the popular newer walking baits the devils horse excels on a traditional twitch, twitch, pause type cadence. The long profile and spraying action of the devils horse is unusual and fortunately with so many options on the market it may be something different. Aside from the hook hangers the construction is very solid for a bait of its price and the colors while not flashy more than get the job done. While I am dissapointed the hook hangers havent been done away with like the ones on the Zara Spook I cant give any bait I have to have in my tacklebox a score lower than a 4. There are some other good double propbaits around but expect to pay 3 times the price.
